Grand Entrance Staircase Makeover

When we moved into our home one of the first things I wanted to tackle was the entryway staircase. The architecture and wow factor were already there but were tainted by worn carpet and muted focal points. First things first, I pulled the carpet up. I kicked myself after I found out that Nebraska Furniture Mart would do pull up and haul away for FREE with purchase of carpet. After a day of pulling, hammering, and sweating the carpet was up and I began painting the banister. I used Miwax Gel Stain in Walnut from ACE Hardware. I painted it over the existing white paint and taped the spindles where they met the banister. It took two coats and ended up a dark brown which was what I was going for. With this project the gel stain is solid, if the banister had been honey oak the wood grain would have probably shown through which would have been a nice touch, but I didn't feel like stripping the white paint. I then had Nebraska Furniture Mart (Sidenote: They have some of the best prices on Stair Carpet I could find!) install the carpet. I love the way it turned out and feel it makes a great first impression!
